Altruistic Engineering & Design

Join students from Winchester Thurston School’s Altruistic Engineering and Design program for a hands-on, drop-in maker experience at MuseumLab. Visitors will learn how simple engineering can make a powerful difference in someone’s life by helping transform a toy into a switch-adapted toy—a toy modified so children with limited mobility can activate it using an accessibility switch.
Working alongside Occupational Therapist Heather Grace from the Children’s Institute and Reagan’s Journey, participants will explore why adaptive toys matter, how they support play and independence, and how maker tools can be used to create meaningful solutions. Visitors will take part in different steps of the adaptation process, learning basic tools and techniques while contributing to the creation of a finished adapted toy.
