youth metal arts residency

Designed to nurture young creatives as they grow their understanding and skills with metalworking

about

MuseumLab is seeking youth in grades 8 – 11 who are interested in working with metalworking tools, materials and processes to explore creative ideas.

  • Eligible students must attend a Pittsburgh Public School in grades 8-11.
  • Previous experience with metals may be helpful, but is not necessary.
  • Up to 8 students will be selected to take part in the residency program.

The residency is not a formal training or certificate program.

Students must be able to attend residency sessions at MuseumLab on these alternate Tuesdays:

  • March 21, 4pm-7pm
  • April 4, 4pm-7pm
  • April 18, 4pm-7pm
  • May 2, 4pm-7pm
  • May 16, 4pm-7pm
  • May 30, 4pm-7pm

Each student will receive a $100 materials budget

Artwork will stay at the Museum during the residency, and students will document their creative process. They will work with staff to select items to be displayed in a showcase over Summer 2023.

Students who attend at least 4 of the 6 sessions and present work in the summer showcase will also receive an honorarium for their work, in the form of a gift certificate.

All work will be returned to the students in late August or September 2023.

Food will be provided.  Transportation costs can be covered by request.

Applications are open now through February 25, 2023.
There is no fee to apply.  Selected artists will be required to submit a waiver signed by a parent or guardian to participate.
 
 
Selected applicants will be notified by Friday, March 3.
